Showa Kinen Koen (The Sakura Guide)

The Spot

Located in the western suburbs of Tokyo, Showa Kinen Koen is one of Tokyo’s largest public parks. Formerly a Japanese air base operated by the US military, it was only in 1977 that the land and base were handed back to the Japanese government. While they still maintain and operate the old military runway, most of the place has been turned into a large park, home to more than 1,500 sakura trees.
