Tokyo Tower

Too often compared to the Eiffel Tower of Paris, Tokyo Tower is in fact a big, fancy communication (TV and Radio) tower built in 1958. Indeed, as soon as the NHK started to broadcast TV in 1953, a large broadcasting tower needed to be built in order to cover the entire region.

Tokyo Tower is thinner than the Eiffel Tower, but 13 meters taller with a total height of 333m. For over half a century, it has been the pinnacle of Tokyo and the only best place to enjoy a unique view of the region thanks to its two observation decks (at 150m and 250m). Unfortunately for this beautiful piece of engineering, that withstood many major earthquakes, Tokyo Tower was deemed many years ago as unsuitable for covering the need for TV stations to broadcast digital signals. Also it has to share the hall of fame of Tokyo’s tallest structure with another Tower : Tokyo Skytree with a stunning height of 634m.

Bien souvent comparée à la tour Eiffel, la tour de Tokyo est un fait une immense antenne de communication (TV et Radio) construite en 1958. En effet, dès que la chaîne de télévision NHK a commencé à émettre en 1953, le besoin d’une telle tour s’est avéré indispensable afin de couvrir toute la région.

Pour en revenir à la comparaison avec la tour Eiffel, la tour de Tokyo est en réalité un peu plus fine, mais plus grande de 13 mètres, pour une hauteur totale de 333m. Pour plus d’un demi siècle, la tour fut le point culminant de Tokyo, et par la même occasion, le seul point de vue pour admirer la région grâce à ses deux terrasses situées à 150m et 250m.
Malheureusement, cette oeuvre d’ingénierie, qui a survécu à tous les séismes, a vu sa réputation se ternir il y a quelques années déja du fait qu’elle ne soit pas compatible pour couvrir les besoins en diffusion numérique pour les chaînes TV. De plus, une autre tour très récente fait de l’ombre à ses terrasses : la tour Tokyo Skytree qui se dresse sur 634m!
